SVP call on Government to provide special funding

St Vincent de Paul say charities will not be able to deal with the increased demand for help unless the Government provides them with special funding.
It comes as a moratorium on electricity disconnections ends today after being introduced to help households struggling to pay their bills during the pandemic.
SVP say they fear the winding down of Covid supports in the next few months will see many families face hardship, especially as 'back to school' approaches.
Speaking to RedFM News, Gerry Garvey from SVP says they have seen a large increase in the amount of people looking for help.
"There's too much for the charity sector to do without Government support, because you could be talking a bout many millions.
"There was a big increase in calls going back to last April when the pandemic was getting into full swing, and that increase has been maintained.
"It hasn't gotten any bigger, but if you compare the calls for assistance we're getting now compared to 2019 you're probably talking about a 30-40% increase."
