Teacher Unions Welcoming Decision To Cancel Plans For Leaving Cert students To Return To School

The u-turn means sixth year pupils will be taught remotely until the end of this month.

The Government changed its mind after pressure from the teaching unions the ASTI and TUI who said their members wouldn't teach in class.

TUI General Secretary, Michael Gillepsie says it's the right decision:

"It's the best move for schools, I'll give time for schools to get used to the new situation they find themselves in. We've been calling all week for that pause and so we welcome it. Schools need time to plan, if they're going to bring leaving certs back, and it gives teachers time to use what they now are used to."

ASTI President, Ann Piggott is pleased the Government has listened to teachers' concerns:

"They were very worried about the huge numbers...8,000 6,000 7,000... whatever, they were very worried about that. And they're also very worried about new variants, which means it might be more transmissible than before. So members are really happy now that they can work from home for lifting why."
