The Duke of Edinburgh's funeral will not be a state one

The President of Ireland Michael D Higgins says he learnt with great sadness of his death today at the age of 99

Tributes have been paid following the death of Britain's Prince Philip

President Michael D Higgins says he learnt with great sadness of his death.

He says the Duke of Edinburgh served the British people with an unfailing commitment and devotion to duty.

Taoiseach Michael Martin says the commitment of the Royal Family to Irish-British relations is an important part of the work we do together - and he paid tribute to Prince Philip's own important contribution.

The Duke of Edinburgh's funeral will not be a state one and will instead take place at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.

The College of Arms says Prince Philip's funeral will also not be preceded by a Lying in State - at his request.

Arrangements for a ceremony have been revised because of the coronavirus pandemic with members of the public being asked not to attend.

In 2011 Prince Philip accompanied the Queen on a State visit to Ireland during which they spent time in Cork

English Market fishmonger Pat O'Connell told RedFM News that the Prince had a great sense of humour

"I suppose my perception would have been that they would very much have been of the "horsey" set, but when we actually met them perceptions sometimes  prove to be all wrong and they were just a very ordinary couple. Prince Philip had a fantastic sense of humour and it was just a fantastic day for Cork and the English Market and we had some really good fun on the day"
