The Lives Of The Prisoners Who Died On Spike Island Will Be Marked With A Fireworks Display Tonight

The island served as a prison on three occasions
The lives of the prisoners who died on Spike Island will be marked with a fireworks display tonight.
The display is part of a celebration to mark the 81st anniversary of the handover of the island from Britain to Ireland in 1938 and comes as management say they are on track to host over 70,000 visitors this year due to new exhibitions and the delivery of a 126 seater ferry.
At one point during the Victorian era, one inmate a day died on the island.
Speaking to RedFM News, general manager of the island John Crotty says extensive excavations have been carried out on the island.
