Lord Mayor of Cork hits back at criticism

It follows her refusal to accept an anti-water charges petition.
Cork's Lord Mayor has hit back at criticism levelled at her after she instructed Council members not to accept a petition opposing water charges.
At the end of last month around 50 people gathered outside Cork City Hall ahead of a council meeting and attempted to hand in a petition
with almost 15,000 signatures.
The petition by the People's Convention, demanded that local councils stand against the water charges and encourage the non-payment of the charge.
The group described the move by the Council not to accept the petition as a gross insult.
However Cllr Mary Shields says the office of Lord Mayor is "A-political" and she does not believe it was suitable for her office to accept the petition.
Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show she says she's disappointed that the Lord Mayor's office is being targeted by the campaign.
