The National Bus And Rail Union Says Train Services Could Yet Come To A Halt Due To Safety Concerns

It follows a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour on trains

The National Bus and Rail Union say train services could yet come to a halt due to safety concerns.

The General Secretary of the Union has written to the Chief Executive of Irish Rail to voice his concerns about these incidents.

The Cork to Dublin service was disrupted earlier this week due to reports that drugs were being used on board, while passengers were removed from a train in Mallow after it was alleged they were also carrying drugs.

The NBRU have made repeated calls for the establishment of a dedicated transport police to tackle incidence of anti social behaviour.

Speaking to RedFM News, Dermot O'Leary from the NBRU says they want action now:

'There is a real danger that train services will be curtailed or stopped if this type of behaviour doesn't cease. Why are these people being allowed to travel in the first place? They are well known at this stage, a lot of these people are well known to Gardai and I have said on Red FM on several occasions, the Cork Dublin route is known as a drug corridor at this stage where people are ferrying drugs up and down to Dublin. I am aware the Gardai are monitoring the situation, but that doesn't do anything to bring comfort to members on the front line.'
