Nine units of Cork city and county fire brigade battled a major fire on the north side of the city throughout last night.

The fire broke out at the National Recycling Centre in Churchfield with the alarm being raised at 7:45pm

Smoke could be seen across the city for several miles.

The Garda Representative Association is calling for tougher sanctions for those who injure their members.

The call comes after a guard was hospitalised having been struck and dragged 100 feet by a car near Baltimore in West Cork.

She suffered serious leg injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening

The US, Canada, France and Italy are among 16 new countries added to Ireland's mandatory hotel quarantine list. 

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly made the announcement last night after a special Cabinet meeting on public health. 

The measure will come into effect from 4am next Thursday.

Gardaí have warned that they will be out in force this weekend ahead of Monday's easing of the Covid-19 restrictions.

They are warning people to stay within their 5km limit.

From Monday,12th April people can travel within their county for both exercise and recreational purposes.
