Children with special needs returning to the classroom today

Classes will initially be limited to 50% capacity with children going to school every second day.

It comes as special classes in secondary schools look set to resume on February 22nd, after teachers and SNAs announced they'd back the move.

The Teachers Union of Ireland says it would also facilitate the return of Leaving Cert students on the same week, subject to public health advice.

Minister of State for Special Education, Josepha Madigan, says today's return of special schools is only the start.

"We've all heard how challenging distance learning has been for some students and we know from evidence that it doesn't work for many fo them.

"That's why we sought to prioritise special education as part of that return to school, and we've never wavered from that commitment.

"But I have to say this is only a start, it's on a 50% basis to allow for attendee with reduced numbers in a school setting, and this will obviously be reviewed in line with the public health advice in due course."
