Three Businesses In Fermoy Left Under Water After A Pump In The Flood Defence Scheme Malfunctioned

Engineers say a pump malfunctioned and led to water levels rising in the Brian Boru Square area of the town
The flooding at Brian Boru Square was unexpected as millions of euro has been spent on the town's flood defence system which has proved effective over the past decade
The owner of the Avondhu Bar described how he had to mop out up to five inches of water from his premises after a faulty pump sensor on the flood defence scheme led to the pump malfunctioning. It's understood Council engineers were in the dark about the fault as the system also failed to send out an automatic alert
A report on the fault at the pump house on Rathealy Road is to be produced to ensure there is no repeat of the issue
The rest of the town was not impacted by any flooding as the flood defence barriers were effective in all other parts of the town
The Avondhu bar, which has been closed due to Covid restrictions, has been badly damaged with the owner said to be discussing the matter with his insurers
Local Councillor Noel McCarthy told RedFM News that this was an unfortunate event
"I visited two of the premises yesterday, The Wimpy and The Avondhu Bar, and I saw first hand myself that the water got in, especially in the Avondhu Bar there was a lot of water, and I met the proprietor Richie and his wife and his daughter who were cleaning it up. It was very unfortunate and they were very upset and you can understand why because the pub has been closed the only for 12 months now. They could have done without this incident which happened yesterday, and obviously a report will to have to be done on how it managed to happen"
