Three Children in Hospital After West Cork Explosion

Three small children are being treated in hospital for burn injuries after an explosion at their home in West Cork last evening.

A pair of five-month-old twins and a 17 month old child, were injured when a canister containing petrol was brought into the house at Knockmore, Drinagh at around 6.30pm.

It's understood the twins - a boy and a girl - were in the room at the time and were caught in the blast as was their older sibling.

The children's parents - who are in their 20s - raised the alarm and gardaí and paramedics were among the first on the scene before the Coast Guard's Rescue helicopter was tasked.

All three children were airlifted to hospital and were accompanied by their parents.

Their injuries have been described as serious but not life threatening. 

Meanwhile gardaí have cordoned off the house and garda technical experts are due to carry out a forensic examination of the scene to try and establish what exactly caused the explosion.
