Three new schools for Cork

A little bit of schooling history is being made in Cork this week. A new purpose built Gaelscoil will open its doors for the first time in Clonakilty this morning. The facility has been under construction over the last six months. Over 150 pupils and teachers will assemble for the last time at the old rented school based at the Waterfront Buildings on Clarke Street at 10.15 this morning. They will then march through the town centre to the new state-of-the-art Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin on the Fernhill Road. There will be a ceremonial raising of the school flag at the new building which has been named after local patriot Michael Collins. Meanwhile, two new Educate Together schools are opening this week in Rochestown and a third is opening in Dublin. Total pupil numbers in Educate Together primary schools will grow by around 1,500 to exceed 16,000 for the first time. This will make Educate Together the second largest supplier of primary education in the State after the Catholic Church.
