Secondary school teachers in the TUI have been directed not to undertake any work normally done by ASTI members who are involved in dispute action.
The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland is staging industrial action, in the form of strike days and the withdrawal of substitution duties, in a dispute over pay for new teachers.
The TUI says in cases where a school's teaching staff has dual-union membership, it's up to each individual Board of Management to decide whether or not to open their school on a strike day.
The first of seven days of strike action is scheduled to take place next Thursday.
TUI President Joanne Irwin, says in secondary schools where there are members of both unions, TUI teachers won't be covering the work of ASTI members:
