Two gardai injured in attack in East Cork

Five men have been arrested after two gardai were attacked and hit with stones and rocks in East Cork earlier. A garda sergeant was hit on the head by a rock which fractured a bone near his eye while his colleague suffered cuts to the head. Gardai on patrol stopped two young men walking outside Killeagh at around 11.30 last night. While they were talking to the pair a car pulled up and the occupants attacked the officers. The occupants of the car and the other two men took off and the injured gardai radioed for help. They were taken to Cork University Hospital where they received treatment for their injuries. Midleton Gardai identified the men as coming from Dungourney and there was a stand off for several hours before five of the men gave themselves up. Four of the men are in their 20s and one is in his 40s - they're all being questioned in various garda stations in East Cork.
