UCC Students' Union slam proposal to restrict bar opening hours

The proposal is being considered by Cork City Council.

UCC's Students' Union has slammed a proposal being considered by Cork City Council to restrict the opening hours of the campus bars. 

The proposal discussed by the local authority includes limiting the opening hours of UCC's campus bars to 5pm instead of 12pm during Freshers' Week and RAG Week. 

The union have branded the idea as 'short sighted' and 'a step backwards' claiming it will only result in more students drinking in houses and increasing the number of issues caused.

Residents in the area claim they are subjected to anti-social behaviour by students due to noise late at night as a result of parties, litter thrown along the road as well as drunken students wandering onto the street. 

However, UCC SU's Communications Officer Barry Nevin says he cannot see the benefit in restricting the opening hours of the on-campus bars:
