UPDATE: Gardai Seal Off An Area Around Brian Boru Street As They Probe Alleged Sexual Assault

A woman in her mid-30s contacted the Cork Simon Shelter to report that she had been sexually assaulted by a man
Gardaí are investigating an alleged sexual assault in the city centre in the early hours of this morning
Gardai received a call from a passer-by of an incident on the old railway siding off Brian Boru St around 1am but when they attended the scene there was no one there.
A short time later a woman in her mid-30s contacted the Cork Simon Shelter on Anderson's Quay to report that she had been sexually assaulted by a man off Brian Boro St.
The woman was taken to the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital where she was examined and treated by medical staff at the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit.
Gardai hope to take a full statement from the woman later today when they have been given the go-ahead to interview her by doctors treating her at the hospital.
Meanwhile gardai cordoned off the scene off Brian Boru Street and a garda technical team have begun a forensic examination of the scene of the sexual assault.
Gardai have also begun harvesting CCTV footage from the area in the hope of identifying the assailant in the case while they have also appealed for any witnesses to contact them at Mayfield Garda Station.
