A verdict of accidental death was recorded today at the inquest into the death of a 78 year-old man who was fatally injured after he fell on the escalator at Merchants Quay shopping centre at the end of May...

The inquest heard that John Murphy from Silversprings Avenue in Mayfield was in the Shopping Centre at around 3pm on May 31st last when the accident happened and he suffered catastrophic and fatal injuries..

The court heard from the investigating gardai that CCTV footage showed John Murphy putting his crutch or walking stick in front of him as he stepped on to the top of the escalator and it appeared that this caused him to fall

Merchant's Quay Shopping Centre confirmed that the escalator was checked and serviced six times a year by the manufacturers and also examined twice a year by the shopping centre's insurers who found no evidence of any fault or malfunction.

The jury returned a verdict of accidental death and the City Coroner extended his sympathy to Mary Murphy on her tragic loss
