Vicky Phelan says state apologies are to get stories out of the news

State apologies appear to be designed to get a story out of the news, according to Cervical Check Campaigner Vicky Phelan.

The 46 year old mother of two is currently in the US taking part in a clinical trial.

The cervical check scandal was back in the spotlight in recent weeks after 32 year old Lynsey Bennett reached a High Court settlement in her case.

Vicky Phelan says the state apology issued in 2019 was important for some women affected by the controversy but not for her.

"State apologies don't really mean a whole lot in my book, to be honest.

"I think they're done to try and get the story out of the news a lot of the time.

"I know I'm quite cynical, but I do know that some women and families that did attend that apology that day did get something out of it, and that's what mattered; that at the end of the day some people felt it was sincere."
