Warning issued as dangerous jellyfish found along South Coast

Anyone entering the water this weekend are being warned of potentially dangerous jellyfish washing up along the south coast.

Irish Water Safety say the Portuguese man o' war infestation is the worst in 100 years and has been caused by the waters warming to 15 degrees in recent months.

They are the most dangerous and venous jellyfish to enter Irish waters and Cork has been badly hit with reported sightings all the way from the Old Head in Kinsale right across all the south and south west facing beaches including Inchydonney and Long Strand.

Swimmers are warned that the stingers of the Portuguese man o’war remain venomous even after death, and contact with the skin can result in severe repercussions.

Speaking to RedFM News John Leech from Irish Water Safety says the Portuguese man o’war can kill.
