"We must never forget the part we played in this painful past, never forget what happened and ensure it never happens again"

The words of the County Mayor Mary Linehan-Foley as she issued an apology on behalf of Cork County Council for failing and neglecting the victims and survivors of Mother and Baby Homes

The apology comes on foot of RedFM News contacting the County Council last week for comment on the publication of the recent report into Mother and Baby Homes and the subsequent apologies issued to survivors and victims from several councils around the country

The County Mayor, who hereself was born in Bessborough, says she is deeply sorry to all the mothers and babies who suffered and continue to suffer, she apologised to those who endured "appalling mistreatment and those who were abandoned by society and state.

Speaking to RedFM News in the past few minutes Cllr Mary Linehan Foley says she hopes the apology will go some way towards helping the healing of mothers and babies who were mistreated at Bessborough

On Monday night the City Council stopped short of issuing an apology however the Lord Mayor read a statement which acknowledged the publication of the report, the apology on behalf of the state and 'Cork City Council's association with same'.

Bessborough now falls within the remit of the City Council and the Lord Mayor has announced that a working group is to be established to deliver the actions set out in the Government's Action Plan
