Food shopping doesn't need to be disinfected

Food shopping doesn't need to be disinfected after it's unpacked, according to Safefood.

Last month saw the biggest amount of grocery sales ever recorded - with households spending an extra 122 million euro on groceries.

Safefood says that there is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted on food packaging.

Dr Linda Gordon, Chief Specialist in Microbiology with Safefood, says people should wash their hands instead.

"The risk of transmission of the virus through food packaging is very low, therefore it is not necessary to disinfect all of your food when you bring it home from the supermarket.

"The risk can be managed best by washing your hands before you leave the house, observing good hand hygiene throughout the supermarket, and washing your hands as soon as you come home and again after you've unpacked your shop."
