Ireland’s current Covid numbers are 'better than anything we could have hoped for a few weeks ago'

That's according to the Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn.

NPHET yesterday said new virus cases are now dropping steadily, with 309 new cases confirmed yesterday.

As of yesterday there were fewer than 200 people in hospital with Covid, the lowest level since mid-December.

Dr Ronan Glynn says the improvement is down to people following the public health advice:

"These numbers are better than anything we could have hoped for two weeks ago. Of course I'll give all the caveats and say it's still a high level of disease, it can still turn quickly. We're in a much better position than we thought we would be and that is down, first and foremost to people listening to the messages and sticking with this."
