US death toll approaches 55,000

More than 1,300 people have died of the coronavirus in the US in the space of 24 hours. 

It brings the States' death toll from Covid-19 to nearly 55,000. 

Almost 1 million cases of the virus have been detected in the US.

Across the world, nearly 3 million people have been infected with the disease, while 207,000 have died.
