AUDIO: UCC Manager Ger Cunningham after Fitzgibbon Cup Exit
UCC are out of the Fitzgibbon Cup after drawing with UL in their final group game at the Mardyke this afternoon. Ger Cunninghams side hammered GMIT in the opening round, but after a defeat to NUIG in their last game, it came down to todays fixture against group leaders UL in a head to head with the Galway University team, to decide who would progress to the Quarter Finals. Five points down at half time at the Mardyke this afternoon, The rebel students pulled level eight minutes into the second half, helped by a goal from substitute Barry Lawton. Kilkennys John Power had a penalty opportunity saved approaching the mid point of the second half, but Anthony Spillane pointed minutes later to put the hosts two clear. The sides went point for point in the closing stages, level 6 times in all, before it ended all square at 1-14 a piece. NUIG beat GMIT by 0-17 points to 0-12 which means the draw for UCC was not enough to see them through to the last eight, and they exit the competition. Cork IT are already through to the quarter finals, but will look to beat UCD tonight in order to avoid taking on Group B winners UL in the last eight.
