Serbia 3-2 Republic of Ireland

Stephen Kenny's wait for a win as Republic of Ireland manager continues as his side went down 3-2 to Serbia in their World Cup qualifier last night.

While there were positives to take from the game, Serbia's clinical finishing meant that the home side took all three points in the Group A encounter.

Ireland started brightly, and took the lead through Cork's Alan Browne, the former Ringmahon Rangers midfielder heading home to cap off a fine team move on 18 minutes.

Serbia equalised five minutes before hand time, Dusan Vlahovic slotting home past Mark Travers in the Ireland goal.

Substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic did the damage in the second half, scoring twice in six minutes to put Serbia 3-1, his first goal a spectacular chip over the head of Travers from just outside the box.

James Collins scored four minutes from time to reduce the deficit to a goal and set up a nervy finish, however the Boys In Green couldn't force an equaliser.

Next up is the visit of Luxembourg to the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Elsewhere in Group A last night, Portugal peppered the Azerbaijan goal, but only came away with a 1-nil victory. 

The only goal of the game was a first-half own goal.
