Sports Headlines 19th August

We have major Cork interest at the Olympic games in Rio this afternoon.

Togher’s Rob Heffernan and Leevale’s Alex Wright contest the 50k Walk along with training partner Brendan Boyce from Donegal.

Heffernan, who was retrospectively awarded an Olympic Bronze from London 2012 is taking part in his FIFTH Olympic Games, while Wright comes into this event after a 46th place finish in the 20K Walk last week. Todays race begins at 12 noon.

Elsewhere for Team Ireland today, Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow will return to action in the Women's Golf tournament. Both Women will be hoping to emulate their second round performances.

Meadow starts from 1-over par after a round of 66 yesterday, but Maguire could put herself in medal contention if she can repeat her round of 65 as she resumes from 3-under par today. Inbee Park of South Korea leads the field on 10-under par.

Natalya Coyle returns to action in the Women's Modern Pentathlon. After an impressive start yesterday in the Fencing, Coyle sits in 12th place overall ahead of today's opening Heats in Swimming.

The first Friday night game of the new Barclays Premier League season takes place tonight at Old Trafford.

Manchester United could give a competitive debut to world record signing Paul Pogba as they prepare to host Southampton. Kick-off is at 8pm.

There's also one game tonight in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

Galway United will host Bray Wanderers in a 7.45 start at Eamonn Deacy Park.

The bulk of the action here at home tonight is in the third round of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup.

Athlone Town host Shamrock Rovers, while Bohemians face Derry City at Dalymount Park.

St. Pat's will take-on Limerick at Richmond Park.

Those three games all kick-off at 7.45, while there's an 8 o'clock start between Wexford Youths and Sligo Rovers in Ferrycarrig Park.

In Gaelic Games Douglas recorded a one point win over Glen Rovers in the RedFM Senior Hurling League last night

It finished 5-10 to 1-21.

In Golf Graeme Mc Dowell is 5 off the lead on 2 under going into day 2 of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Shane Lowry is level par.

Rafa Cabrera Bello and Kebin Na share the lead on 7 under.

Finally in Rugby Munster host Zebre tonight in their first pre-season Friendly, kick off at the RSC is at 7pm.
