Wimbledon set to be cancelled

The fates of a number of this year’s major sporting events could become clearer today.

UEFA are to hold a video conference involving the heads of 55 member associations.

They’ll discuss the findings of two working groups set up in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

One will look at how the current football season can be completed across Europe

The other is reviewing rules and financial issues like player contracts and transfer windows.

One UEFA source is quoted by The Guardian as saying it’s unlikely the season will resume before the end of June.

Meanwhile, the Main Board of the All England Club will convene today to decide whether or not Wimbledon can go ahead.

Play on both the ATP and WTA tours has been suspended until the beginning of the grass court season at the start of June.

This year’s French Open has already been put back to September as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Back to football, and collective wage deferrals are up for discussion when the PFA meet with the Premier League and EFL representatives today.

The proposal is just one way all parties will look to tackle the drop in revenues that have come with the COVID-19 shutdown.

NFL executives say they’re expecting to start their season on schedule and without interruption.

Over three-and-a-half thousand people in the United States have died as a result of COVID-19.

But the NFL say they are still planning for international games in the 2020 season, with a schedule drawn up by May.

NFL owners have also agreed to expand the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams.
