Professor Mills: Covid-19 Vaccines Mightn't Be effective Against Indian Variant

72 cases of the variant have been detected in Ireland so far

There's now over 3,400 confirmed cases of the variant in the UK.

It comes as the Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan says it's likely to be even more transmissible than the UK strain and the Chief Medical Officer says NPHET is "genuinely concerned" about the number.

Trinity College Dublin Professor of Immunology Kingston Mills says it's going to be very difficult to contain it:

"The worry is that the vaccines are working against what was the UK variant, but if the Indian variant get the hold, we don't know for sure that all the vaccine will work as effectively, for example there's been some evidence, both from India and the Seychelles, that suggests that the AstraZeneca vaccine is not that effective against either the South African variant or the Indian variant."
