There's Fears In Government About What The Rise In COVID Cases Could Mean For Plans To Ease Restrictions

It was thought some COVID restrictions would be eased next month
If yesterday's 769 new cases are part of a wider trend then it will be more difficult to re-open construction or ease travel rules.
Political Correspondent Seán Defoe says there's worry at Cabinet:
'Ministers know they're facing some really tough decisions.
On one hand a trend of higher cases means much more risk, and puts in doubt the likes of re-opening home building, easing the 5km travel rule or any other lifting of restrictions.
On the other hand they know many people are at their wits end and there's a fear people will start doing what they like if there isn't some small easing of Level 5, to help people's mental health if nothing else.
A number of cabinet Ministers also strongly believe construction needs to re-open, as a massive shortage is being made worse by the week.'
