10% local property tax cut voted for at City Hall

The Lord Mayor didn't conform with his Sinn Féin party in the vote.

A 10% cut in the city’s property tax was voted for at City Hall last night.

It means the council will now have extra difficulty balancing its draft 2016 budget and will have find €535,000 to do so.

Councillors had the opportunity to adjust next year's rate by plus or minus 15% with Sinn Féin and the Anti Austerity Alliance both calling for a full reduction.

City management however had warned that this would cost the city in excess of €1 million and the benefit to 79% of properties in the city would be between 26c and 91c per week.

The Lord Mayor didn't conform with his Sinn Féin party and instead of a full 15% reduction he voted for a 10% cut that Fianna Fáil had been calling for.

When asked ahead of the meeting about Sinn Féin's calls for a 15% cut Lord Mayor Cllr Chris O'Leary told RedFM News he had to above party politics in his capacity as Lord Mayor and chair of the meeting:
