57 year old woman who stole over €6,000 from distant relative convicted at Bantry District Court

Mary Ann O'Sullivan of Avenido de Los Angelos, San Pedro de Alacantara, Malaga, Spain pleaded guilty to 27 counts of stealing money belonging to 91 year old Catherine Beardsmore

The money was taken from the AIB Bank in Kinsale between December 24th 2014 and April 20th 2017.

Judge Colm Roberts said he had a duty to mark the seriousness of the crime to deter people from doing the same thing.

He said this type of offence could be happening all over the country and said elderly people must be protected from those who would prey on their vulnerability.

The Court heard that O'Sullivan had assisted Catherin Beardsmore with her financial affairs when she moved into Haven Bay Care Centre in Kinsale from the UK where she had worked as a school teacher.

O'Sullivan set up a joint emergency account with both of their names on it at the AIB in Kinsale with Ms Beardmore's knowledge and consent, however she had also set up a second joint account at the same bank which she used to withdraw €6,467 in 27 separate transactions.

The court heard O'Sullivan had taken the money to fund a business venture and had planned to pay it back, only for the business to fail.

O'Sullivan wrote a letter of apology to Ms Beardsmore and also brought €6,500 with her to court.

Judge Roberts convicted O'Sullivan and suspended a four month jail sentence due to her guilty plea, her having no previous convictions and her repayment of the money.
