A major clean up operation continues in Cork following Storm Ophelia and Storm Brian

Cork was battered by severe winds and torrential rain this week causing hazardous conditions on the roads

City Council crews began an extensive clean up operation this week after Storm Ophelia's wrath brought down trees, electricity poles and lines while leaving debris scattered across the city and county.

Crews worked over night continuing their efforts to clean up the city and county and are working with the ESB to remove wires from the roads.

Over 100,000 homes in Cork were knocked off the power grid earlier this week and the ESB began a major restoration opertion to restore power. Although the majority of homes had power restored within three or four days. ESB warned that in some areas it could take up to 10 days for power to be restored to every home.

Futher damage and power outages were caused last night following Storm Brian after the county was hit with gusts of winds of up to 130 kilometres an hour. Mallow and Fermoy were hit with flooding after the River Blackwater burst it's banks. Park Road is impassible this morning and the road at Longfield Brige is closed as a result.

Speaking to RedFM News Director of Services for roads with Cork City Council Tom Stritch says there were a few issue yesterday but these have slowed down overnight.
