A Row Has Erupted About The Market Stalls Installed On Cornmarket Street

The stalls were built six years ago during the €4 million revamp of the street

Businesses on the street have raised the stalls with the City Council saying they're taking up the centre of the street and lie unused most of the time.

Despite the revamp and investment in the street the independent traders on Cornmarket Street continue to struggle and this has led to calls from Former Lord Mayor Des Cahill for the removal of the stalls.

He also claims Cornmarket Street is only a success now because of the money invested in the street by private businesses and says people need to move on from the "nonsense nostalgia" associated with the street.

His comments sparked anger among traders, including Emmanuel Murray, a 3rd generation traditional trader who says the Council imposed these stalls on them.

Cllr Des Cahill defended his comments and told the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM that he believes the stalls need to be moved so the street can be enhanced
