Aer Lingus is to lay off 130 staff at Cork Airport without pay for three months

Trade Union Fórsa are to meet with the airline this afternoon following the announcement which will impact staff from September to November.

Fórsa say staff are devastated by the move and also have also warned that they are expecting further bad news following a meeting of Aer Lingus and their Shannon-based staff this afternoon.

The airport will be closed for ten weeks from the 10th of September until November 22nd for resurfacing work on the main runway.

Speaking to RedFM News, Bernard Harbor from Fórsa says staff should be kept on the pay-roll:

"Fórsa will be meeting with the company early this afternoon and we hope to get more details about the thinking behind that. We've said to them, we need to engage with the company to keep people in work. Bear in mind that this is a time when most of the economy will be back to normal or getting back to normal later in the year. We want to keep Cork based Aer Lingus cabin crew on pay roll with a relationship with their employers, so that when the crisis in aviation is over- and that's gonna take a while- the skilled people are in place to make sure that Cork and other cities and towns that depend on the aviation industry can recover, once the international situation improves."
