Alert Issued Over Rodent Multiplying In Cork
Officials are anxious to contain the spread of coypus as their burrowing can threaten river banks.
A public appeal has been issued for sightings of coypus in or near the River Lee.
The rat-like rodent is a metre in length and it's believed to be multiplying in numbers in Cork
It's understood two or three were released into the Curraheen River two years ago and since then The National Parks and Wildlife Service has captured 10 in the area.
Other sightings have been reported recently and officials are anxious to contain the spread as their burrowing can threaten river banks.
Speaking to RedFM News Conservation Ranger with the NPWS Danny O'Keeffe says they can cause an extensive amount of damage and that problem is exasperated by how quick they multiply
