Ancient Trading Laws Impact On County Council Plans To Regularise Casual Trading Spaces
Traders opposed to the changes have been quoting laws that date back as far as the 14th century
Plans by Cork County Council to introduce bylaws on casual trading spaces may come undone due to ancient trading laws issued by English monarchs
The Council is seeking to designate casual trading spaces in towns and villages across Cork but had to row back after traders - quoting laws that date back as far as the 14th century warned - that they could face legal action..
A number of them quoted decrees issued by British monarchs which allow them to trade wherever they like in towns and not in designated zones
The Council has commissioned research into the laws and market rights and once it's completed it will come before the council for consideration towards the end of the year
Speaking to RedFM News Independent Councillor Alan Coleman says the solution may lie with the Oireacthas introducing new laws to override the ancient decrees
