Asylum seekers at risk of abuse
There are almost 700 refugees living in asylum hostels in Cork while awaiting a decision on their application stay in the country These figures include 246 children, 114 of which are under 4 years of age. It's been reported that a wait of up to 9 years exists for these families before they find out whether or not they can live in Ireland During this time they cannot work or claim social welfare. They receive a weekly allowance of 19 euro and 10 cent. A number of sexual and domestic abuse cases were reported last year according to the Reception and Integration Agency. Speaking to RedFM News Solicitor Claire McCarthy who has worked with asylum seekers says that many of these people have already been through extremely difficult circumstances.
