Blow to the Irish retail sector

The retail sector has taken a further hit today as nearly 300 jobs are to go at two high end supermarkets. Marks and Spencer are to close four stores with the loss of 180 jobs - in counties Dublin, Kildare and Westmeath. Superquinn stores are to undergo an overhaul and will be rebranded as Supervalu with the loss of 102 office staff in Lucan. Parent company, Musgraves, say the 2,500 staff across the 24 Superquinn stores are unaffected by the name change which will come into effect next February. Director of Communications with Musgraves, Edel Clancy, says it's hoped staff can be re-deployed throughout the company: (Click above for audio)
