Brave move taken by 32 workers at the former Vita Cortex plant in Cork has helped to bring about a change in the law for vulnerable workers

In December 2011 workers at the plant staged a sit-in after they were made redundant without pay with immediate effect

The action finally ended after 139 days, when the former workers agreed a resolution with management but their treatment highlighted the need to protect workers in insolvency situations.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has said that the introduction of sanctions for directors who fail to seek the appointment of a liquidator to an insolvent company will help to protect vulnerable workers.

Congress General Secretary Patricia King told RedFM News that the action of the Cork Vita Cortex staff and Clerys staff in Dublin has helped to propel this change.
