Breakthrough with Leukemia drug
A new drug could replace the need for chemotherapy for leukemia patients. The drug 'Ibrutinib' is being seen as a shift away from traditional ways of treating cancer, and nasty side effects like nausea and hair loss don't occur. 500 Irish people are diagnosed with leukemia a year and the new drug could be available within two years. Consultant Hematologist, Dr Patrick Thornton, from the Royal College of Surgeons says it boosts survival to 90 per cent, up from 81 per cent for conventional treatment. Click PLAY to hear audio
