Calls for change in legal system in wake of verdict in Belfast rape trial

The 9 week trial has sparked debate on the public nature of the trial and the use of social media.

The legal system is working against victims of rape and in favour of their perpretrators.

That's according to Mary Crilly from Sexual Violence Centre Cork who says the trial process is not fit for purpose and needs to be changed

She was speaking in the wake of the acquittal yesterday of all four defendants in the Belfast Rape Trial.

Mary Crilly hit out at the statements made by the defendants' solicitors on the steps of the courthouse in Belfast saying they lacked compassion and were insensitive and unnecessary

Speaking to RedFM News Mary Crilly says the statistics show that the conviction rate in rape trials stands at around 5% .
