Calls for emergency shelter in West Cork

West Cork Women Against Violence have called for longer opening hours for the crisis support service following 1200 calls to its helpline last year alone

A regional emergency shelter needs to be established in West Cork urgently.

That's according to the West Cork Women Against Violence project which has revealed that it's helpline handled 1200 calls last year.

The Bantry based group commissioned a report which found that the victims of domestic abuse in their area are generally older women, who are employed and well educated.

The Someone to Turn To, Somewhere to Go report highlights the urgent need for a regional emergency shelter and for longer opening hours for the crisis support service.

Marie Mulholland from the West Cork Against Violence project told RedFM News that the provision of temporary emergency accommodation is vital for these women and their children.
