Childcare crisis looming Leeside

SIPTU are calling for more investment into the childcare sector as seven creches in Cork are on the verge of closing

The childcare crisis in Cork has been bubbling under the surface for many years.

That's according to SIPTU who say childcare across the city is unaffordable for parents, unsustainable for providers and workers are not getting a professional wage.

They are calling on childcare workers to join the "Big Start" Campaign, which is lobbying the Government for increased investment in the sector.

Seven creches across Cork are in danger of closure due to new legislation which no longer allows community scheme workers to supplement full time staff.

Speaking to RedFM News SIPTU Organiser Teresa Butler says the Government must act now before the crisis gets any worse.
