Childcare crisis looms in Cork

Childcare in Cork is on the brink of an unprecedented crisis.

It comes as seven crèches across the city are in danger of closing following changes to legislation, lack of funding and the introduction of the Single Affordable Childcare scheme.

The centres in Togher, Ballypheahane, Shandon, Mayfield, Ballyvolane, Mahon and Churchfield, all provide early intervention to some of the city's most vulnerable children under the age of three.

epresentatives of the crèches met with Minister Katherine Zappone to request an increase in the amount paid per child under the Single Affordable Childcare scheme from €4.60 to €9.20.
