Concerns expressed over potential new Cork town

Traders in Blackpool fear it will disrupt ongoing flood prevention works if it goes ahead.

The Blackpool Flood Action Group has written to the County Council amid fears that the proposed development of a nearby town will threaten ongoing flood prevention works.

Traders have raised concerns over the water flow from the roads that will be built to accomodate Monard, and say it will end up draining into the Bride River which flows through Blackpool.

They've also dismissed the effectiveness of swales on the road designed to slow down the flow of water as they say they've seen no maintenance programme in plans for the features.

Locals in the town which has suffered from flooding in recent years are expected to join other residents living in the vicinity of the proposed new town to decide whether to lodge an appeal against the plan with An Bord Pleanála.

Speaking to RedFM News Ger Buckley of the Irish National Flood Forum says they want the OPW to be involved in the plans.
