Cork based Help the Homeless group calls on Government to tackle homelessness

A Cork based group are calling for the government to set up an Emergency Commission to tackle the homelessness crisis.

The House the Homeless campaign made the comments on foot of a 24 hour hunger strike held outside City Hall in a bid to highlight the problem Leeside. 

The group will also be holding a candlelit vigil and sleep out at City Hall from 8 o'clock tomorrow as part of World Homeless Day.  

Figures from the Simon Community show that only 7% of properties available for rent in August were within the budget of those on rent supplement.  

Leeside, the charity say they have seen a 24% increase in the number of people sleeping rough this year alone.
