Cork battered by high winds and heavy rain

The ESB are working to restore power to thousands of homes that were hit by overnight high winds and heavy rain. Crews are hoping to attend to 6,500 customers who were affected; 2,000 in Munster, and 4,500 in Leinster. Gusts of up to 103 kilometers per hour were recorded at Cork Airport last night and power outages were reported in  Castleview Glounthaune - where up to 21 ESB customers are affected. Elsewhere power outages were reported in Centre Park Rd Ballintemple, Dennehys Cross, Bandon, Kilmoney Carrigaline, Bandon,  Newcestown, Castletownbere and Rosscarbery. A Ryanair London Stansted to Cork flight was diverted to Dublin, and another Ryanair London Stansted flight which was bound for Shannon was diverted to Cork - however that landing was also aborted at Cork Airport and re-diverted to Dublin airport. Irish Ferries meanwhile has cancelled its two morning sailings of the Jonathan Swift, but passengers can travel on the Ulysses cruise ferry. While the wind and rain alerts by Met Éireann have expired heavy rain showers are forecast for today. The stormy conditions have also made driving conditions dangerous around the country, with AA Roadwatch warning drivers to be prepared for spot flooding, fallen trees and debris.
