Cork County Council Proposes Historic Significant Extension To City Boundary

Cork County Council has announced that it has submitted a proposal for a significant extension to the Cork City Council area of jurisdiction.

It follows the publication of the report by the McKinnon Review which recommended a boundary extension instead of a merger of Cork City and County Council.

The decision received a mixed reaction and Cork County Council requested clarification on a number of key issues particularily the compensation package which it's expected will be offered to make up for the loss of revenue streams from areas that will no longer fall under the remit of the County Council.

However after a special meeting this morning the local authority has called for a further extension of the city boundary which would make Cork City nearly two thirds the size of the functional area of Dublin City Council.

It would represent a transfer of Commercial Rates and Local Property Tax base with a value of over €16 million.

Speaking to RedFM News Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr Ian Doyle says it's Cork County Council's way of recognising the importance of Cork City to Cork County and taking a "Whole Cork" approach:
