Cork Fine Gael Senator Bucked Party Line And Is Supporting Defence Force Members Call For Increased Pay
Senator Colm Burke has called for the establishment of an independent pay commission
That's to examine the matter amid an ongoing recruitment and retention crisis in the Army, Naval Service and Air Corps.
This week the government announced a new €1,270 tax credit for navy personnel who spend more than 80 days at sea, however there have been calls for more to be done to stem the flow of personnel leaving the three branches.
PDForra has highlighted poor levels of pay and conditions in the defence services and say they expect up to 800 people to quit by the end of this year.
Speaking to RedFM News, Senator Colm Burke says the issue of pay must be dealt with urgently:
