Cork fishermen urge Taoiseach to fight for their industry

Cork fishermen are urging the Taoiseach to stand up and fight for their industry as they say they are slowly being squeezed out of the profession.

A flotilla gathered at Roches Point early this morning and have been making their way to the city to Horgans Quay as they highlight what they say is the "erosion" of their industry

Once they arrive at Horgans Quay they will walk with their families to the Taoiseach's offce in Turners Cross to hand deliver a letter outlining the plight of their industry.

The Port of Cork has been in talks with the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation and has agreed to facilitate the fishing vessels at the quays

Speaking to RedFM News Patrick Murphy of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation outlined what action he wants the Taoiseach to take.

"Sit around the table with us. Go to Europe and fight for us. We'll give him the ammunition, we'll give him the paper work that he can go there and make the fight for us. But he needs to sit down with us.

"We need proper representation in Europe. It's not like we come with problems and no solutions.

"I'll sit with the Taoiseach, like we've been trying to do for the last few years and give him solutions that they cannot argue with."
