A young Cork man who died on hunger strike in 1920 will be awarded a posthumous medal for his service during the War of Independence.
25 year old Joe Murphy from Pouladuff Road took part in several attacks on British Forces and died on the 76th day of a hunger strike at Cork Gaol following his arrest for possession of a bomb.
The then Lord Mayor of Cork Terence MacSwiney died on the same day following a hunger strike in Brixton Prison.
Minister of state for Defence Paul Kehoe confirmed the Murphy family will be presented with the 1917-1921 Service Medal
